Curly Fries

I work at Arby's. I do not eat at Arby's. But the other day I had the craziest craving for curly fries and red ranch. What's one time going to hurt?

I'm sure most people would be surprised just how much fast food--even a small curly fry--damages their bodies.

When I stopped eating fast food (mostly because of that Supersize Me documentary) I started paying more attention to my body. I learned what it liked (spinach, apples, nuts, zuchini, etc.,etc.) and what it didn't like (meat, curly fries, processed "food"). Certain things really make me feel like shit--hamburger for example. I had to stop being polite to people feeding me dinners of taco soup, shepards pie, or spaghetti because politeness just isn't worth the heavy, grumbly pains in my gut. I much prefer to be the stobby vegan bitch who either doesn't show up to dinner or who makes it terribly difficult for others to prepare food for me.

My body is my priority.

But what about those times when I get a mad craving for something? For curly fries?? Well, I give in. Then like the other day I realize that I'm an idiot. I wanted the crunch on the outside and the soft, hot inside combined with that seasoned outer layer and an added smooth tang. It tasted good. I will admit that much. My mouth enjoyed the curly crunch and the tangy red ranch. But, my tummy wasn't happy. Maybe next time I'll remember it isn't worth it.

RyBread Wisdom: When you decide you're not going to do something (like eat meat--or curly fries), trust that decision over your cravings. Don't eat at Arby's.

  1. I like your Arby's posts, because when I was pregnant I had horrible morning sickness the entire time. I had 2 months of Arby's cravings. Every day for lunch I HAD to eat a roast beef sandwich, curly fries with fry sauce, and a diet coke. If I tried to substitute something else, my body would rebel and I wouldn't be able to keep food down for the rest of the day. Weird, I know, and horribly unhealthy, but it was survival .

I've been in a bad food phase for a few months and I need to make changes. So thanks for inspiring me to pay a little more attention to what is good for me.

    1. Tiffany, it's funny you say that because my mom still doesn't like to eat Arby's because one time when she was pregnant she ate there and she threw it up.

    2. I totally understand cravings. . . although not pregnancy. And I also understand not wanting to eat things after throwing them up (like McDonalds chicken nuggets when I was ten and with my friend's family...eek!) I get sick just seeing a Mcdonalds anymore.

  2. man, I love curly fries too...

So, I had a very similar experience this week. I've been craving chicken nuggets and bbq sauce from mcdonalds for like three weeks and I finally gave in. I ate a whole 10 piece of crunchy chicken nuggets with the delicious bbq sauce that comes in thoes little square cup things.

I honestly didn't notice that it made me feel sick or anything, but the cornbread casserole my friend made (with hamburger) sure had my stomach growling.

  3. I'm one that tries really hard to honor what my body is telling me. Sometimes I'm too busy or stressed or tired to listen (which probably means I need to take a look at those things) and I eat crap. But when I'm in a good place it's so much easier to hear what my body wants. And when I give it what it really wants, it's oh so much happier. It's easier to feel good about myself and my body when my body is happy. Thanks for the reminder. :)

  5. I'm currently doing weight watchers and they told us that Arby's was the worst place to eat. Apparently beat out McDonald's, Burger King, and everyone else...

So we have cut out the food, what about the Arby's Sauce? That's the only real thing I like about the restaurant... If you tell me no, Ry, I'll listen!

    1. MJ, I doubt I have to tell you anything about it. I mean, really?
But, if the sauce is all you're eating from there I wouldn't worry too much...unless you're eating buckets of it then that's just disgusting.
